’Tis Pity She’s a Whore
Poetics and Politics of Incest in John Ford and Early Modern Drama

Sonia Massai, Reader in Shakespeare Studies, founding member of The London Shakespeare Centre at King’s College London, is an expert on the history of the transmission of Shakespeare, the evolution of Shakespeare’s texts in print before 1709 and the appropriation of Shakespeare across different languages, media and cultures in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Her publications include Shakespeare and the Rise of the Editor (Cambridge University Press, 2007), World-Wide Shakespeares (Routledge, 2005), and a Routledge sourcebook on Twelfth Night (2007). She has also edited several early modern plays, including Shakespeare’s  Titus Andronicus (Penguin), T. Heywood’s The Wise Woman of Hoxton (Globe Quartos series), and most recently,  J. Ford’s Tis Pity She’s a Whore, which was published as part of the Arden Early Modern Drama series in August 2011. Dr Massai is currently working on a new book on Shakespeare and Global Modernity.

Dr Massai’s work on the afterlife of Shakespeare and early modern drama has reached audiences beyond the academic community. She was interviewed by BBC Radio 3 in 2009, has written for The Guardian and has given key note talks and chaired panels at Shakespeare’s Globe and the Barbican Centre.
